Some desert time

In preparation for our trip to the pound, Jeff bought 2 kangaroo tails.  These sit in the fridge section in the supermarket!!!
Before you can eat kangaroo (Marlu) tail you have to singe it in the fire.  As you can see by the photo, Jeff is scraping off the singed bit and taking the fur with it.  This process took about 20 minutes with Andrea his 'coach' sitting to his right.
After the kangaroo tails are de-furred they are wrapped in foil and put in a hole.  The tails are covered in hot coals and left for about an hour to cook.  In the old days the locals didn't use foil.....

Cutting up the tail into 20 cm pieces to share around our very large group.  No....I didn't taste it, much to everyone's pleading.  Contrary to popular opinion vegetarians don't eat kangaroo tails!!!.

While the kangaroo tails were being cooked, Magda made the damper.  She enlisted my help to make some of them as well as cut them ready for butter and honey......so yummy!

Early in the term the children went to the Art Centre to paint.  The artists assisted the children with ideas for their paintings.  This was a lovely display of their artwork.
On the last day of term we present the things we have learnt this term in our Culture classes.  This term it was Strong Healthy Bodies.  Each child presented something different.
End of the term jobs were to clean the room and the chairs.  The kids had lots of fun with this and did not mind being squirted!

Another trip out to the pound to the lookout for some damper and tea.  Next to the lookout is a cave called Nuns Cave.
This cave was used by the nuns in the days of the mission.  It was a very cool place to pray on those HOT HOT wet season days.  We now access it with a ladder.

This is the entrance that the Nuns would have used.  There is still an alter in the back of the cave that the locals add to.


The children love to light fires and the 'Big kids" like to perform in front of them.!!!

Leaving beautiful Balgo

WET SEASON FUN In the second last week of school the Wet season decided to come calling. It bucketed down both in Balgo and the Tanami Rd. The locals love the rain as it fills the waterholes and brings out the animals. On our way out to check out the waterfall and waterhole we came across Shane and 15 odd children returning from the waterhole. It is lucky there is no glass in the windows otherwise there would be nowhere for the kids to sit!! There was a chorus of frogs down at the waterhole and this little fellow didn't mind a cuddle This is the waterhole which is fed by a waterfall when it rains.  Unfortunately the creek had stopped running when we got there so the waterfall was only a trickle. Such a lovely place to go in the desert. Accepted into the community

Little Hoppy is keeping me company, but not sure I went him looking after my toothbrush!! Loving the smell of my soap!!   Such an amazing experience at Mass last week. We were given a blessing by the community. It was so hot so the doors were open. Even the town dogs seek shelter in this oppressive heat.  Magda, one of the Elders blessing me. I will never forget this experience. So special.  It finally rained if only for 5 minutes. But when it comes down it really comes down.  Heading up one of the hills in the ‘pound ‘ These lovely mats are right through the school. This one is at Play Group   Play group set up before the families arrived. I spend 2 days organising Play Group. This is such an important time for the children to learn to sit and to learn some English, ready for school 🏫 When you play hard there is nothing better than sleeping it off. Sooo cute

3 WEEKS TO GO

  AT SCHOOL One week in 5, the pool man goes out of community for a break.  This is when we take the kids outside to play some water games.  Here we are playing limbo with the water stream. The slip and slide is one of their favorites.  The days have been over 40 a lot, so the kids are happy to get wet before they leave for home. Just before the Football grand final, Warrick was doing some spelling words with the letters and he made 'Go Tigers" so I made Go Cats.  Most of the people in Balgo follow the Eagles or the Dockers with a small spattering of the other teams.  There is even a couple of Geelong supporters in town. I took my class out on Country to see the dreaming of the two rocks.  This is a dreaming story of 2 boys and their mother who walked around the Kimberley.  When they got tired the boys turned into the two rocks.
