School holiday time

The year is going so quick.  We are already finished half the year.  Still so much to do in my classroom.




To celebrate NAIDOC week, the church Elders had a smoking ceremony


Everyone at church had to walk through the smoke and wave it into their faces.

Jeff and I heading out of community for 2 weeks in Darwin. When you drive down the Tanami you couldn't miss this turn off.!!


When leaving community, I always look forward to some hot chips in Halls Creek.

We spent a couple of nights in Kununurra before flying to Darwin.  It was a 7 hour drive to Kununurra from Balgo.
NAIDOC week celebrations were kicked off with a march through the town.  We joined the march and listened to a lovely talk by a local Elder.


After we flew to Darwin we headed to Kakadu.  We took a boat ride down the Adelaide River to see the Jumping Crocs.  They certainly put on a show for us.


We headed to Cooinda in Kakadu and did the Yellow Waters tour.  We saw many crocodiles and lots of lovely birds.....and of course a sunset!!!
At Mindil Beach we were part of a very large crowd watching the sunset.  During the afternoon they had run their annual Beer Can Regatta.  Some of the beer can boats were very well made. Lots of preparation has to happen to make these boats...……...so many beer cans per boat were used.
We took the 2 + hour ferry ride to Bathurst Island which is one of the two islands that make up the Tiwi Islands.



Jeff was happy to find the football ground on the island as well as many Bombers supporters. We even met a cousin of Anthony McDonald Tippungwuti!!!  Tippungwuti is a very popular surname on the island.




We enjoyed the museum and art gallery on the island


This Olive Python was still enjoying the warmth of the road in the early evening.  He was very long and fat.


These are the very large Milk fish.  At Cullen Bay these fish hang around the wharf hoping to be fed with some left overs from the café.


Back in Balgo and my classroom.  Spending some time getting ready for Term 3.

    I lived in Darwin for 8 years in the early 2000's. I always took guests on the Adelaide River jumping croc trip, it's amazing!!

Leaving beautiful Balgo

WET SEASON FUN In the second last week of school the Wet season decided to come calling. It bucketed down both in Balgo and the Tanami Rd. The locals love the rain as it fills the waterholes and brings out the animals. On our way out to check out the waterfall and waterhole we came across Shane and 15 odd children returning from the waterhole. It is lucky there is no glass in the windows otherwise there would be nowhere for the kids to sit!! There was a chorus of frogs down at the waterhole and this little fellow didn't mind a cuddle This is the waterhole which is fed by a waterfall when it rains.  Unfortunately the creek had stopped running when we got there so the waterfall was only a trickle. Such a lovely place to go in the desert. CHURCH IN BALGO FOR THE LAST TIME A little out of focus but you can hopefully see the gum leaves being dripped into the coolamon that I am holding.  This is the water blessing that happens at the beginning of each church service.  It is nic...

Around town

As you drive into town, the  Warlayirti art gallery is advertised on a car bonnet.  The art work is spectacular at the art centre. Local artists come each day to the centre. Many of the artworks are sold around the world. Soooo many art pieces that would look great in our house!!! Some of the artists at work  This is the art centre. The outside certainly doesn’t give away the beauty it contains.  The football ground..... yes, that’s red dirt!!! This is the shop. We are lucky as the shop has a good range of groceries. So many tins of baked beans ... happy 😃  This is the school. It is called Luurnpa. The name comes from a Dreamtime story about Luurnpa the Giant Kingfisher.  Some lovely sunsets

Third term is well underway

Gary, an artist at the Warlayirti Gallery has painted all of the AFL teams on car bonnets that will be on display on the MCG at some stage.  He has painted me a Cats picture....love it! My manky couch has been replaced at last.  This one is very comfortable. We had a bit of fun when one of the girls brought in a tube of pink lipstick.  It is hard to tell in this picture but we all had pink lipstick on.....even the boys.  Only one of the boys wanted to be in the photo, but the lipstick came off very quickly when the photo was taken. Each week a child from every class wins an award for positive behaviour.  The little fellow on the cushion won his class award, but was asleep when it was presented!!  So we moved the photo to him! Lots of red dirt!  There is no end to it......on my clothes, in the car, staining my feet and on my floors. We made another trip out to the lookout site in the pound. This weeks sunset....
