LEAVING BENDIGO FOR THE 4 DAY DRIVE TO BALGO VIA BURRA, COOBER PEDY AND ALICE SPRINGS. We were packed to the rafters.  It's amazing how much we needed to pack for Rusty! Driving out of Mildura we were met by a dust storm.  The car got a taste of red dirt earlier than expected! Rusty had a great seat in the back.  High enough to have a good view out of the window.  However, he slept almost all the time, crowded in by many boxes which threatened to fall. We stopped at the Kulgera Roadhouse. It was the stop before Alice Springs.  Time for lunch and a walk for Rusty. This is a shoe tree!!! We were pleasantly surprised that the first 300 odd kilometres of the Tanami Track was bitumen.  Of course the next 550 to the Balgo turnoff  isn't!!  There had been rain in the last few weeks so we were hoping that the road was not closed.  We met some water and some damp bits but apart from that, th...

I'll be leaving this amazing community on a little plane on the 18th and will arrive home on the 19th. Excited to be coming home for a holiday. I know this just looks like a regular grey cloudy sky, but for us it is the promise of rain.  A couple of blogs ago I added a photo of clouds!  We had about 6 months of blue sky with no clouds......so this grey sky was exciting.  Sad to say, no rain was forthcoming. As the end of the year approaches we were treated to a 'cookout at the lookout'.  An amazing view for a meal I'm sure you would agree.  This is the place that most of my sunsets come from. One of the spectacular views from the lookout My kids hard at work. Another fire out the back of my house.  We are lucky that there are not many trees or grass for fires to take hold.  No one ever does anything about the fires as they just burn out. You know when you're in the desert when you leave the bu...

A visitor from the south

Joel came to Balgo for a visit.  It was great to see him and have him meet my kids.  He enjoyed some construction with the kids during Free Time Friday. Joel helped with the alphabet flip cards.  Some of the children are still learning the letter sounds and names. The perfect activity for the budding architect.  We were building a house after we spent the week reading 'The House that Jack Built' The kids were sad that Joel was leaving!!!! We made a trip out to the Rock Art.  This is well off the tourist tracks.....and in need of a decent grade!! We ventured out close to sunset to seek the cool, but it was still over 35....phewwww No snakes to be seen which was a bonus. The rock art has not been dated as yet! We headed out to the lookout for a cookout!  Joel learnt how to prepare a kangaroo tail. I dare say Joel will not be putting kangaroo tail on his list of favourites.  As ...
